The MPD (Mounds Police Department) Explorers Post #7064 is a program that Chief of Police Brown has put together in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America to benefit our local children. Children from ages 14 to 21 years of age can apply for the program which meets once per week and prepares them for a career in law enforcement or any other field they’d choose to pursue. The program, which is funded through the University of Illinois Extension, puts the children in uniform and teaches them what it is to be and become a police officer. It prepares them to be physically fit and also prepares them to take the Police Academy Power Test. The MPD Explorer Program teaches the children police procedures to include, but is not limited to,

Traffic Stops Team Building/Social Skills Public Speaking How to handle Domestic Violence Situations How to write Police Reports in Chronological Order Illinois Law/Illinois Compiled Statutes/Illinois Vehicle Code Defensive Tactics Traffic Control Police Defensive Driving Verbal Judo Physical Fitness Handcuffing Firearms Tasers

The MPD Explorers program also monitors the children’s grades in school as a requirement of the program.

Every year the Explorers from all around the State of Illinois meet in Springfield, IL to test what they’ve learned and compete for trophies and other awards against all of the other Explorer Post across the State i.e. the Illinois State Police Explorers, Chicago Police Explorers, Joliet Police Explorers, Elgin Police Explorers and many, many other department’s Explorer Posts.

The following year the Explorer Programs across the State of Illinois will compete in National Competitions against Explorer Posts from all across the United States to include the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Los Angeles Police Explorers, NYPD (New York City) Police Explorers, Miami Dade Florida Police Explorers and many, many more.

Upon successful completion of the Explorer Program your children will be prepared to enter a law enforcement career or enter College if they so choose.

Law Enforcement Agencies that are hiring often choose Explorers first because they know that these candidates are already trained, not to mention the fact that these children are already known to the agencies because they’ve been networking with them for several years through the training and State & National competitions.

The Explorer Program builds confidence, instills pride in it’s participants, advances social skills and prepares our children to take on leadership roles in their lives and careers.
